Toy Shopping in Hong Kong – Sham Shui PoNot many are familiar with the Sham Shui Po district. For the few who know about this area, they know it to be famous for cheap computers and other electronic goods – not for toy hunting. Well, perhaps I can change some of that perception. Sham Shui Po is 6 MTR stops from the district of Tsim Sha Tsui (or 2 stops away from Mongkok). The most popular place in Sham Shui Po is the Golden Computer Centre – which is known for being the go-to place for computer parts and electronic goods at rock-bottom prices. To be honest, I never knew to look for toys there until a couple of years ago. I only go there to buy computer stuff. Sham Shui Po is an area of mostly wholesaler shops carrying different goods – from baby clothes to lady’s bags, from shoes to hardware supplies, from plastic raw materials to pet food – you name it, it’s probably there. Anyway, going back to toy hunting – the street to look for is called Fuk Wing Street. Along this road are several toy shops that sell items at wholesale prices. Just take the MTR exit D2 and follow the blue arrow on the map provided below. The blue asterisk is Golder Computer Center and can serve as your landmark. One of the shops I visited is called Ming Fat Toys Co. – located at the Ground Floor of #40A Fuk Wing Street. The sales lady who was there was very friendly and was nice enough to allow me to take some photos. I’ve found quite a number of long out of production items there. But that’s not all they have. They also carry a lot of recently released items. As an example, I was able to purchase a DCSH Brainiac (in orange card) for only HKD29.00 (approx. US$4.00). I’ve seen some really low-priced SOTA Street Fighters, McFarlane NBA figures, some old ToyBiz stuff like Spider-man and a few rotocasts. There are several more shops along Fuk Wing Street that are worth checking out. The one thing I noticed in Sham Shui Po, though, is that not very many people there speak or understand English. So be well practiced in the art of charade – or bring pictures – because describing something as simple as “Batman” to a shopkeeper can sometimes be a bit of a challenge. The area is a bit out of the way – so you may want to to weigh things beforehand and decide whether or not the place is worth visiting. Links to other similar resources:
