Mystery of the Toys R Us “70s” Batman

Posted by: Casimir at 10:32 am on Wednesday, October 12, 2011

During Mattel’s presentation last summer at SDCC, the Mattel reps announced that Toys R Us would be offering a free Arkham City Batman figure repainted in the classic blue and grey color scheme, to be given away with a pre-order purchase of the Arkham City video game. Sounds like a pretty good deal, unless you’re aware of TRU’s history at screwing up such offers. Looks like that’s happening again.

Based on anecdotal evidence and my own experiences, it seems no one within the TRU organization has any knowledge of such an offer. (And if you ask a TRU employee if the offer is valid with both the regular and “collector’s” editions of the games, you might get to see an exploding head.) Not one official peep has been made about this since the SDCC announcement.

And now the figures are showing up in stores. Since no employee is aware of the offer, what are they doing? Why, putting them on pegs for anyone to purchase, of course! What, you thought they’d hold them back for next week’s release of the game?

So, if you have no interest in being yanked around by TRU’s pre-order “deal,” then head out to your local TRU now and see if your store has put these out yet. Or ask. They’ll be more than happy to sell them to you.

And if you have the Matty $5 off coupon, that works too!
